At Kōdaiji, a temple steeped in the legacy of Hideyoshi,a mystical night unfolds, woven from Noh and light.
The Kodaiji Digital Noh Performance Executive Committee is pleased to announce “Digital Noh Performance at Kodaiji,” a three-day event to be held from October 2 to 4, 2026.
Kodaiji is a historic temple founded by Kita-no-Mandokoro, commonly known as Nene, to pray for the repose of her late husband, Toyotomi Hideyoshi. In his later years, Hideyoshi developed a deep devotion to Noh theater. He is said to have commissioned and personally performed original Noh plays celebrating his own achievements, now known as Taiko Noh. In 2024, our committee presented “Digital Noh Performance at Kodaiji 2024,” bringing together Taiko Noh and digital art.
This year, the broadcast of the NHK historical drama Toyotomi Brothers! is drawing considerable attention in Japan and abroad to the history and culture associated with Hideyoshi, Nene, and the Toyotomi clan. By combining Noh—Japan’s oldest surviving form of theatrical art—with cutting-edge technology, we will create an unprecedented and enchanting setting. Through this event, we invite visitors to experience the historical significance and cultural beauty of Kodaiji in an entirely new way.
Presented as a special nighttime viewing, the event will offer a new cultural experience while helping to further enhance Kyoto’s appeal as a travel destination and revitalize the local community. It will also introduce visitors to Toyotomi culture, Noh theater, and the traditional beauty of Japan, while sharing with audiences in Japan and around the world the rich history and spiritual heritage that Kodaiji has preserved through the centuries.

The garden in front of the Hojo is enveloped in light and a dreamlike sea of clouds, while Kodaiji Temple’s iconic bamboo grove is beautifully illuminated. A mesmerizing “Digital Noh Dance” performance is also brought to life using transparent displays and 3D holographic technology. These cutting-edge innovations reveal an entirely new side of Kodaiji Temple.

ACCESS
Kodaiji is a temple of the Kenninji branch of the Rinzai school of Zen Buddhism, located in Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto. Its honorific mountain name is Jūbuzan, and its principal image is Shakyamuni Buddha. The temple’s full name is Kodaiju-sho Zenji.
Kodaiji was founded by Kita no Mandokoro, the principal wife of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, to pray for the repose of her husband’s soul. Its name derives from Kodai-in, the name she assumed after becoming a Buddhist nun.
In addition to being a Zen temple, Kodaiji serves as a mausoleum dedicated to Hideyoshi and Kita no Mandokoro.
